Middle Management:
Supervisors hold the Key to Success for the Organization
The most difficult task in an organization falls on the shoulders of the
Middle Management, that is, the Supervisors.
Who comprises the Middle Management? The team members who have
gained valid experience throughout the years and have excelled in their
field of work thus have been promoted to supervisors. We often see
supervisory positions being filled with individuals of higher education who
have relevant field degrees and qualifications but lack leadership
capabilities.
We observe recently promoted individuals being immediately flooded with
unfamiliar tasks and responsibilities, both towards their superiors as well as
their subordinates, turning the once desired sense of accomplishment and
pride into a short-lived excitement and immense stress. In other words, a
living nightmare.
This leads to a plethora of issues. Firstly, concerning the individuals who
are left to navigate the unknown trying to keep up with what they are
expected to deliver. Secondly, from the organizations' perspective, having
to deal with lower levels of productivity due to poor knowledge and the
gaps created in the staff's motivation. Sometimes these problems are so
severe that can cause anxiety, stress, lack of self-esteem, and discomfort
to the person in charge.
Proper training and preparation protect the person from falling into this trap
and guide team members and the organization to avoid complicated
situations.
What does the preparation and training include:
1. Cultivation of values and principles: Integrity, empathy, trust, love,
consistency, diversity, loyalty.
2. Personal development program. The use of all available resources.
Updated knowledge and skills through books, discussions, and seminars.
3. Training program for leaders. The program should include the art of
Planning, Organization, Delegation, Decision Making, Training and
Motivation and other Professional Management skills
The above preliminary action plan is the beginning of the journey.
Supervisors should always stay in tune with the changes happening inside
and outside the organization. They must be in a position to adjust
themselves to environmental changes.
Supervisors hold the key to the success of the organization, and they
should guide employees to accomplish their duties.
